Most musicians learn triad pairs by memorizing…. two triads.
One triad, then another.
And before long, you’re trying to remember:
- Is the second triad major?
- Minor?
- Diminished?
- Which inversion should I use?
It’s not so much that memorizing a triad pair is difficult.
It’s that they introduce another thing to remember in the middle of improvising.
If you’ve spent any time here, you’ve probably noticed that I’ve been talking less about learning more information and more about gaining access to the information you already have.
This is one of those moments.
A simple shift in how you think about triad pairs can dramatically reduce the amount of mental work happening while you play.
So… Instead of memorizing two separate triads…
Start with just one. Then let it move.
The Traditional Way of Thinking About Triad Pairs
Triad pairs are a powerful improvisational concept used by many jazz musicians because they create melodic lines that sound connected, open, and less predictable than simply outlining chord arpeggios.
For example, over an F major sound, a common triad pair is:
- C major (C–E–G)
- D minor (D–F–A)
But, most explanations stop at: Learn the first triad. Then, learn the second triad. Then, practice alternating between them.
There’s nothing wrong with that approach.
But it creates a subtle problem.
Instead of hearing music, you’re trying to remember another object.
“Wait… what was the second triad again?”
That tiny pause is enough to interrupt your musical flow.
As I often say:
The gap isn’t knowledge. It’s access.
A Simpler Mental Model
Instead of thinking:
Triad A → Triad B
Try thinking:
Primary Shape → Diatonic Nudge
Start with one familiar triad.
Forget the second triad entirely. Yes. Forget about the second triad.
Now ask yourself one simple question:
What happens if I move one note of this triad up a diatonic step?
That’s it.
You’re no longer trying to remember another structure.
You’re simply exploring how one familiar shape wants to move.
Example: C Major Over F
Let’s use the same example.
Suppose you’re improvising over F major.
Start with a C major triad.
C – E – G
Now explore moving just one note up a diatonic step.
Move the G up to A.
Then return to the original triad.
Now move the E up to F.
Return again.
Now move the C up to D.
Notice what happened.
Without ever thinking about a second triad, you’ve naturally uncovered the notes:
D – F – A
Which happens to be… A D minor triad.
And the best part is, you didn’t memorize it. You discovered it.
That may sound like a small distinction, but while improvising it’s enormous.
Because discovery is often much easier than recall.

Don’t Stop at the Top Note
One of my favorite parts of this approach is that there isn’t just one way to use it.
However, I recommend just starting by moving the highest note.
That’s a great place to start.
But don’t stop there.
Try moving the middle note.
Listen to how the character changes for each inversion of the triad.
Now move the lowest note.
Suddenly you’re discovering entirely different melodic pathways without ever abandoning the original shape.
You’re still thinking about one triad.
You’re simply letting different parts of it move.
Every note you choose creates a slightly different phrase, a different color, and a different direction.
That’s where improvisation begins to feel more like conversation than calculation.
Why This Opens Up Your Lines
Many players think of triad pairs as switching between two different shapes.
But I don’t hear them that way.
I hear one shape becoming another. And that subtle difference changes everything.
Instead of jumping back and forth between memorized objects, you’re creating motion.
Movement naturally creates:
- tension
- release
- direction
- momentum
Your lines begin to breathe.
Instead of sounding like isolated arpeggios, they start sounding like connected musical statements.
You’re not merely alternating between two triads.
You’re transforming one idea into another.
You’re Almost Playing a Scale… Without Thinking in Scales
Here’s something interesting.
If you eventually explore moving every note of the triad up a diatonic step, you’ve outlined a six-note collection.
In this example, you’ve played:
C – D – E – F – G – A
That’s essentially a hexatonic sound.
But notice what you weren’t thinking.
You weren’t thinking:
“I’m going to play a hexatonic scale.”
You were simply thinking:
- shape
- movement
- sound
The scale appeared naturally as a byproduct.
That’s a very different mental process.
And it’s one of the reasons I’ve been shifting away from scale-first improvisation and toward shape-first thinking.
Why I Prefer Thinking in Shapes
This idea extends far beyond triad pairs.
Shapes are easier to visualize, easier to hear, easier to remember… And most importantly, they’re easier to access in real time.
When you stop trying to recall large collections of notes and instead begin exploring the movement within familiar shapes, something interesting happens.
Your attention becomes available for things that actually make music feel alive:
- Rhythm
- Articulation
- Dynamics
- Phrasing
- Interaction
Instead of asking,
“What notes should I play?”
you begin asking,
“Where does this sound want to go?”
That’s a much more musical question.
It’s also the central idea behind everything I’m building.
The goal isn’t to know more.
The goal is to gain faster access to what you already know.
Practice Ideas
Here are a few simple exercises to help internalize this way of thinking.
1. Move Only the Top Note
Choose one triad.
Only explore nudging the highest note up a diatonic step before resolving back to the original shape.
Stay there for several minutes.
Really listen.
2. Move Only the Middle Note
Repeat the process using only the middle note.
Notice how different the phrases feel.
3. Move Only the Bottom Note
Now explore moving only the lowest note.
Pay attention to how this changes the direction of your lines. For me, I intuitively ascending in my triad.
4. Mix Them Randomly
Once each movement feels comfortable, begin choosing different notes at random.
Don’t think about patterns.
Listen and respond.
5. Always Resolve Home
After each exploration, return to the original triad.
This helps your ear hear both the tension and the resolution.
6. Practice Every Inversion
Don’t stop with root position.
Explore the same idea through every inversion.
Each inversion creates entirely different melodic possibilities.
7. Repeat in All Twelve Keys
Once the concept feels natural in one key, move it around the entire fretboard.
Eventually you’ll stop thinking about the exercise altogether and simply hear the movement.
Final Thoughts
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned over the years is that musical freedom doesn’t always come from learning more.
Sometimes it comes from simplifying what you’re already doing.
So to recap: You don’t necessarily need another triad to memorize. Start with one familiar shape. Listen for where each note wants to move. Explore those movements. You’ll end up playing the second triad as a by product of this exploration.
