What are guide tones in jazz?

Guide tones are chord tones that help define the harmony and create clear movement between chords. The 3rd and 7th are the most common guide tones because they strongly communicate chord quality and often connect smoothly through a progression.

Why are the 3rd and 7th called guide tones?

The 3rd helps identify whether a chord is major or minor, while the 7th helps define the type and function of a seventh chord. These notes also frequently move by half-step, whole-step, or common tone into important notes in the next chord, making them especially useful for voice leading.

What is the difference between guide tones and chord tones?

Every guide tone is a chord tone, but not every chord tone needs to function as a guide tone. A chord tone is simply a note contained in the chord. A guide tone is a chord tone you use to define the harmony or create a clear connection into the next chord.

What is the difference between guide tones and target notes?

A target note is any note you deliberately aim for in a phrase. A guide tone can become a target note, but target notes can also include other chord tones, extensions, tensions, or melodic destinations.

How do I practice guide tones on bass?

Start with a simple progression such as ii–V–I. Map the chord tones, choose one guide tone per chord, and play the closest possible movement through the changes. Sing the line, keep it within a small area of the fretboard, and then begin creating short melodic statements that connect those destinations.

How do I make guide tones sound melodic?

Don’t only play the guide tones by themselves. Treat them as destinations. Connect them with rhythm, diatonic notes, chromatic approaches, enclosures, passing tones, rests, and other melodic devices. Keep the destination clear while changing how you arrive there.
